چکیده

This paper analyzes which type of individuals’ characteristics drive behaviors in a public good game, depending on strategic uncertainty. The results of the laboratory experiment emphasize that advantageous inequity aversion has a significant effect on the contribution decision but beliefs on the others’ contribution and risk aversion are the characteristics that mainly lead the contribution decision under strategic uncertainty. When strategic uncertainty is removed, the reciprocal behavior of individuals is essentially driven by advantageous inequity aversion, as suggested by Fehr and Schmidt (1999). Disadvantageous inequity aversion has no effect neither on the contribution decision nor on the reciprocal behavior. Our results underline the importance of strategic uncertainty to correctly understand cooperation in voluntary contribution mechanisms. They moreover suggest that behaviors of individuals are consistent between different experimental games. They are therefore in favor of within-subjects analyses. JEL classification: C72, C91, D63, D81, H41.

Inequity and Risk Aversion in Sequential Public Good Games

Behavioral hypotheses have recently been introduced into public-choice theory (Ostrom in American Political Science Review 92:1–22, 1998). Nevertheless, the individual intrinsic preferences which drive decisions in social dilemmas have not yet been empirically identified. This paper asks whether risk and inequity preferences are behind agents’ behavior in a sequential public good game. The expe...

Inequality, Inequity Aversion, and the Provision of Public Goods

Inequality, Inequity Aversion, and the Provision of Public Goods We investigate the effects of inequality in wealth on the incentives to contribute to a public good when agents are inequity averse and may differ in ability. We show that equality may lead to a reduction of public good provision below levels generated by purely selfish agents. But introducing inequality motivates more productive ...

Optimal incentive contracts under inequity aversion

Optimal Incentive Contracts under Inequity Aversion We analyze the Moral Hazard problem, assuming that agents are inequity averse. Our results differ from conventional contract theory and are more in line with empirical findings than standard results. We find: First, inequity aversion alters the structure of optimal contracts. Second, there is a strong tendency towards linear sharing rules. Thi...

Inequity Aversion Revisited

We provide the first systematic study of the robustness of parameter estimates for the Fehr-Schmidt (1999) model of inequity aversion with respect to (i) the occurrence of efficiency concerns; (ii) the scale of payoffs; and (iii) the game used (i.e., cross-game consistency). Moreover, we provide evidence of a bias in the estimates that occurs if one does not correct for strategic considerations...

Measuring Strategic Uncertainty in Coordination Games

This paper explores predictability of behavior in coordination games with multiple equilibria. In a laboratory experiment we measure subjects’ certainty equivalents for three coordination games and one lottery. Attitudes towards strategic uncertainty in coordination games are related to risk aversion, experience seeking, gender and age. From the distribution of certainty equivalents among parti...
